Finding a snake indoors is unsettling, but its presence usually has a practical explanation: food, warmth, or shelter. Foundation cracks, gaps beneath doors, uncovered vents, and damaged screens can provide access. Stay back, move children and pets away, and close nearby doors only if doing so is safe. Never try to grab, trap, or kill the animal. Even nonvenomous snakes may bite defensively, and identification can be difficult. Contact animal control or a licensed wildlife removal professional rather than risking an encounter.
After removal, turn that initial fear into a prevention plan. Seal cracks, fit door sweeps, repair screens, and protect vents with suitable mesh without obstructing ventilation. Keep grass short, relocate woodpiles away from the house, reduce outdoor clutter, and address rodent problems that attract predators. Snakes help control pests; they are not seeking confrontation. Giving them space and securing your home protects both your household and the wildlife outside.
